Professional Development Plan

As a future teacher, in term of improving my teaching performance, personality, and professionalism I have to provide a PDP (professional development plan) before going to the TP (teaching practice). Moreover, planning is an essential strategy to see what you are going to do and to make sure that we are using various strategies to develop ourselves. This plan contains 5 competencies area, which describes the goals of the competencies and the strategies that I will use during my practice.

My Main Teaching competency Goal: enhancing self-awareness and autonomous of the ESL learners through various methodologies and improving professionalism in the school.

Reflection:

As a future teacher, demonstrating professionalism plays an important role in learning new experiences and developing teaching skills. Every lesson I planned to have feedback from my students using exit tickets, as they gave me their opinion and what they feel about my lesson. Also, I was focused to have a peer observation sheet from my colleague to develop myself during the teaching practice. This way helped me a lot to change my strategies and techniques to get the students attention. Also, it helped me to prepare effective lesson plans focusing to cover all the comments from them and from my colleague.

My MST’s comment on this strategy:

“this strategy is very effective one to keep your performance changing to have effective lesson plans in the future”

Reflection:

Planning for learning is an essential part to encourage learners and develop your teaching skills (Harmer, 2007).I have used hands-on activates in the classroom. In some activities, students had to reorder the cubes to know the topic of their lesson. They had to re-order the cubes with each other. Each side of the cube has a letter and they need to reorder it to complete one word in each group. Next, the students share what is their word with the other students orally. All of them need to reorder it orally together with the teacher.

This activity helped the students to have a clear idea about the lesson topic. Also, it enhanced the students fine motor skills, as they were using their hands in this activity. I focused to cover all the different levels by creating some effective activities such as “crossword game”, “roll and word game” in this activity the students were using dice to be rolled, and each face of the dice has a word, and the students need to write the meaning of each one. This activity helps the students to recall the meaning of the word that they have during the semester. Also, another effective activity that I was using was the drawing and making some posters after each class to know what the students understand during the lesson and to give me an idea if anyone has difficulties to understand.

Reflection:

In each lesson, I was using following the MOE time structure, which is 10 minutes for the starter activities to engage the students, 30 minutes for the main activities, and 5 minutes for plenary and revising what the students know in the lesson.  One of my goals was to use the online timer in each activity to manage my time efficiently.

Also, I focused to develop myself using my MCT feedbacks to manage my class time efficiently. Those feedbacks helped me to be more aware of the lesson time.

Time management helped me to relieve my stress about the time, especially that in my school there is no bell. sometimes it gave me some extra time to have more time to have fun with my students especially when the lesson is short. Also, it helped me to complete all of my learning objectives during lesson time, and it dominated my time to not be wasting my time on something not important to have during lesson time.  Also, I focused on developing myself using my MCT feedbacks to manage my class time efficiently. Those feedbacks helped me to be more aware with the lesson time.

Reflection:

Applying formative and summative assessments assisted me in evaluating learners’ levels, working on their weaknesses and needs, and being aware of their strengths. For each lesson, I planned to have formative assessments, to help me to evaluate my students' understanding. Also, to have a clearer idea about their performances. Using different formative assessments, helped me to assess my students' understanding, and it helped me to be aware if I need to use or change some of my teaching techniques. I did not have the opportunity to create a summative assessment to the students because their summative assessments were designed by the MOE, at the end of the semester. However, I had the opportunity to discuss with them their final project in the last week of teaching practice.
